This Ai Weiwei glass vase is a terrific opportunity to own an iconic piece by one of the world's great artists.

The vase is a prolific motif in Ai's work.  Ai Weiwei's Coca Cola vase being a prime example.

In the 1980’s when Ai moved to New York he developed a love of Marcel Duchamp’s ‘readymades’.  Duchamp found items and elevated them to art, most famously writing ‘R Mutt’ onto a urinal and named it ‘Fountain’.  It was met with outrage and indignation in 1917, it was quite possibly the most controversial piece of art ever… at least until Ai Weiwei reached the scene.

Inspired by Duchamp Ai Weiwei began working on Ancient Urns and Vases.  Most famously Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn (1995).  The piece is a photographic triptych of Ai dropping a priceless 2,000-year-old urn, what Ai called a ‘cultural readymade’.  The urn was not only worth a small fortune, it was deeply significant.  The Han dynasty is a historic point of pride for China, a defining period.  It wasn’t just the art world that were upset this time, it was the entire world.  Ai was challenging cultural beliefs, but people were outraged this in their eyes was an act of desecration.

Ai Weiwei continued using vases and urns and either destroying them or making them better depending on your opinion.  Neolithic potter was variously crushed, sprayed like a car, dipped in garish industrial paints… and there was a number of vases that were daubed with the Coca Cola logo… which this amazing Coca Cola glass vase homages.

Visceral, challenging, cerebral Ai Weiwei Coca Cola Glass Vase is a must for a serious art collector.
