Shrigley is a British artist known for his distinctive and darkly humorous works that encompass a wide range of mediums, including drawing, sculpture, animation, and photography. Born, in Macclesfield, England, Shrigley grew up in Leicester and later studied environmental art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, Scotland.
David Shrigley artworks are characterized by simplicity and directness. His drawings often feature childlike illustrations paired with sardonic or absurd captions, creating a humorous and satirical commentary on the human condition and everyday life. Through his works, Shrigley explores themes such as mortality, social interaction, alienation, and the futility of existence, offering a playful yet thought-provoking perspective.
While Shrigley gained recognition for his drawings and paintings, he has also expanded his artistic repertoire to include various other mediums. His sculptures, often made from unconventional materials like taxidermy animals or found objects, maintain his signature dark humor and provoke a sense of unease and introspection. Shrigley has also delved into animation, creating quirky and bizarre short films that retain his distinctive style and narrative.
Shrigley's art has been exhibited globally, and he has had numerous solo exhibitions in prominent art institutions such as the Hayward Gallery in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto. In 2013, he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize, one of the most prestigious awards in contemporary art.
More recently he has released a number of editions and they have become highly collectable. David Shrigley prints famously adorned the walls of Sketch in London, UK and the restaurant soon became an insta-favourite.
David Shrigley's unique artistic style, marked by its humorous and often unsettling undertones, continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
